Summer is over. That statement is a huge blow to some people hehe.
As the first of September is upon us, the beginning of a new academic session brings a host of responsibilities, particularly for foreign students. In fact, this academic year starting on a Monday is no joke at all so you just have to sit tight and enjoy the ride, or not. You choose.

‘E-Solutions normally dey for you’ for this journey in Russia so we really hope you take one or two away from this post as you officially begin a new session this week.
Did you know: Since the beginning of 2025, more than 118,000 study visas have been issued to foreign citizens, which is 20% more than last year.
1. Don’t Play with Your Legal Status
Registration matters
For every foreign student registration at your place of stay is not a suggestion but a legal requirement. This is an issue that a concerning number of new students remain unaware of.
If you are staying in a hostel provided by the university, your educational institution acts as your host party and is legally required to manage your registration with the authorities.
However, if you are renting a private apartment, that responsibility falls on your landlord. The property owner is required by law to notify the internal affairs bodies of your residence. A lot of home owners always try to evade this. If the host party evades the obligation to submit a notification, the foreign citizen has the right to report this to the internal affairs bodies to decide on bringing the host party to administrative responsibility, as well as to choose a new place of stay.
Being aware and ensuring it is completed on time is extremely important. Many people face serious legal issues because of registration in Russia.

Visa and RVPO
We have discussed this in a separate post here. RVPO is a specific permit introduced for international students enrolled in full-time, state-accredited universities. This permit provides a significant advantage by allowing you to stay and work in Russia for the entire duration of your education without needing a separate work permit.
RVPO also grants you a 6-month visa provision after your program for those who want to take advantage of this. Lastly, you can easily get your permanent residence in Russia because of the RVPO so it is definitely a strategic option that offers flexibility and stability throughout your academic career. Don’t sleep on this if you still have the chance to do it.

Temporary Residence Permit for Education (RVPO – Разрешение на временное проживание в целях получения образования)
Introduced more recently, this specific category applies to international students enrolled in full-time state-accredited universities.
Advantages:
- You can stay in Russia for the entire duration of your education, including breaks.
- You are allowed to work part-time without needing a separate work permit.
Application process:
- Requires your student contract or enrollment certificate
- Passport, migration card, and registration
- Health check and HIV test
This permit is relatively easier to obtain for those enrolled in recognized programs and provides more flexibility than a basic student visa.
2. Balancing Work and School
Money is not easy to come by in Russia and as a student, don’t think that you cannot work and study at the same time. Depending on your schedule and priorities you can definitely strike a balance. There are a lot of opportunities available so explore and make use of them, as long as it is legal. We categorically advise against any job that is illegal!

As a full-time student at an accredited Russian university, you have the legal right to work without a special permit in three specific situations:
- Working within your own university (e.g., as a lab assistant or in administrative roles).
- Working during official school holidays, such as the summer and winter breaks.
- Working part-time outside your university (if you hold an RVPO).
You can do English teaching jobs, work online in tech or marketing or even start a small business. Refer to any of the linked posts for guidance, and join our African Community group for jobs to stay informed about any openings.
Lastly, your CV should be a reflection of not only your academic qualifications but also the experiences and skills you accumulate along the way. Make a conscious effort to attend seminars, participate in conferences, and take additional courses that align with your long-term career goals. This is the very best time to build your professional network and practical skills.
