My eyes have seen plenty things in this country sha…
Today is for shipping and logistics companies that work with foreigners in Russia– and for those people who like to think they are special because they travel to and fro African countries every other week.
I understand that some situations are unavoidable when dealing with people’s goods and sometimes businesses have set backs but some businesses or individuals are just outrightly unprofessional.
I sell African goods and I usually import them from my home country to Russia. This fateful occurrence taught me to be extremely careful when dealing with people and not to be in a hurry with making decisions.
So sometime last year (around April), I wanted to ship another batch of goods to Russia and the person I normally use suspended operations for a certain period, so I had to look for other options.
I got connected with a random individual on a WhatsApp group I was on then and the first mistake I made was not going the extra mile to physically identify the person. All my interactions with the person were solely through chats.
I eventually struck a deal with the person (after so much ‘back and forth’) and I was promised that my (30kg) goods will get to me within 14 working days. I didn’t even give the date, (to tell you how far this person went)– he himself suggested this and I agreed.
Mind you, I was also helping one of my friends get some personal things from their family. Long story short, two full weeks passed and I did not receive anything. Worse enough, there was zero communication the weeks following that. I kept calling and writing, all to no avail– my goods were not delivered.
Eventually, over two months later, I was sent just a small part of my goods. I was given a flimsy explanation as to what happened to the rest of my goods. I was not reimbursed and the whole situation really left me frustrated. I could not stop thinking for like a whole month after the incident; to be honest, I almost ran mad.
Since that time ehn, I decided I must ask for physical proof of the person’s existence and maybe even backup of where they live or if anyone I know personally can vouch for their character, since we are all acting funny in this Moscow.
So, It’s either we video call on days I do not have energy or I even meet you personally. All this is so that in case anything happens to my stuff, at least, I have a face to hold.
If the person is travelling individually and maybe just wants to make some money on the side by helping people carry their stuff and not running a business, I sometimes ask for ticket (including return ticket) proof. My eyes have seen shege– once bitten, twice shy abi how dem de talk am?
Another thing I now do, although some people might not agree, is to pay half payment when the goods are picked up and complete the rest when the goods are delivered. I’m sorry but I do not trust any human being.
As much as possible, just ask around and confirm people’s identity and track record before making any serious transactions, especially if you are dealing with expensive goods or sensitive documents. I hope these tips ohave helped you a little bit. May we not fall into the hands of scammers o.
Have a wonderful week!
