If you’re new in Russia or you’ve been here for a while, you’ll understand that finding a place to live, especially in big cities like Moscow and as a foreigner, is a big deal.
This is simply because there are simply a lot of things to consider;
Cost– How much can you afford to pay?
For example, a one-room apartment in Moscow’s center will cost about ₽80,000/month, while it will cost significantly lower (about ₽40,000/month) farther out of the city.
Prices will also vary depending on what utilities or furnishing are available. You can also be asked to pay a fee to secure the property in case of any damage.
The rent is usually paid in cash or through bank transfer. You can make a long or short contract depending on your decision to stay there permanently or not.
Location- Like we said under cost, living in the city centre can cost significantly more than living in the suburbs. But you also need to consider the amount of money you’ll spend on transportation to wherever you need to get to.
You might also be concerned about how close your apartment is from your workplace or university, or how far the metro, shopping malls or popular restaurants are from you.
Living Conditions- Do you want a luxurious or common place?
A proper parking space, elevators, gated compound and security, internet access, heating system, hot and cold water supply, etc.
You can easily make a checklist to make sure all these are in order before signing the papers.
Facilities- Which appliances or amenities would you like to be available?
Many people would like a fully-furnished apartment with good furniture, fridge, washing machine, oven, and other kitchen appliances readily available. So make sure to look out for these.
Housemates- Do you want to live alone, with a friend or someone from your country or someone you don’t know at all?
We have created a WhatsApp group where foreigners living in Russia can list their apartments or house spaces out and they will be connected with buyers.
You can even find a housemate from any country and split the apartment rent with them. If you’re interested, join here.
If you’re a student, you might also be considering staying in a university hostel which might be cheaper than a rented apartment and is probably a better option if you’re planning to connect with other students.
When you’re looking for an apartment, it’s important you write out what is important to you in order of priority- ‘must haves’ and optional points.
And if you still have questions, message us privately on WhatsApp to get some actual advice or join our Telegram channel for the latest updates for any foreigner living in Russia.
