A NOTE TO BORROWERS…

Today, we come in violence. Read to the end so that you will understand my plight.

Oh, where do I even begin? Picture this: I’m casually scrolling through my WhatsApp, and what do I see? My “friend’s” status updates showcasing what seems like a never-ending stream of fun and food. And I’m left here fuming with anger, wondering how on earth someone can flaunt such a lifestyle while they owe me money.

Now, we’re not talking about pocket change here- this is a sum that could actually make a difference in my current condition. For the past three months, my friend has been telling me about how he’ll pay me back as soon as he gets the money. But what I am seeing on his status does not correlate with this story. His updates, in fact, looks like someone who has money, lots of it. I was tired of even asking him already. How can a person be this comfortable with owing? It baffles me to the core honestly.

It’s as if there’s an unwritten rule in some circles that borrowing money is fine, and repaying it is by choice. Since when na? Borrowing money is not a sin, but not paying back is the error there, especially when you have the money. When you get money, the first things you should clear should be your debts.

And let’s talk about timing. Don’t wait for lenders to knock on your door demanding their money before you pay. That’s a sure way to sour relationships and create unnecessary tension. Instead, try to settle your debts as early as possible. It shows you have respect—both for your friends and for the trust they place in you.

Now, I’m not saying you can’t have fun. Just remember that flaunting your lifestyle on social media while ignoring your responsibilities is not acceptable. It sends a message that you prioritise pleasure over your responsibilities and the promises you have made, and doing that can create problems and wounds that might never heal.

So, when next you borrow money, promise yourself that you are doing it with the intention of paying back. Honour your commitments, and keep your relationships intact. Let’s bring back the golden rule of borrowing and paying back in time. Who knows? You might even find that keeping your debts settled leads to a lot more peace of mind and way less drama on your WhatsApp timeline.

We know some of you will not rest until they make a flyer with your picture pasted on it. Just continue.
