LONELINESS IN ‘THE ABROAD’- WAY OUT

Is it true that foreigners always deal with loneliness?

Being in another man’s land far away from home comes with its share of problems, one of which is the feeling of loneliness.

There is that general knowledge that living abroad can be lonely especially if you’re not among people that you can familiarise with.

The funny thing is, it does not just affect people who are alone or without friends, even people who are surrounded by people can sometimes feel lonely. Experiencing loneliness a few times is okay but it becomes alarming when it is your permanent state.

1. Get a pet- If your living conditions allow it, getting a pet (maybe a dog) is one great way to get yourself some company. Aside from that it also gives you a sense of purpose as you take care of this animal, it can help ward off the feeling of isolation.

2. Join/create groups with people around you- There are communities (religious meetings, book clubs, football clubs, etc.) you can be part of, both online and physically that can help bring you out of that lonely state because you have people you can relate with.

Ask questions and just be open to creating new relationships. And you can organise these events too- a house party isn’t a bad place to start.

    3. Read books or watch movies- This is a sure way to cure loneliness, whether fiction or nonfiction, you can go deep into a book/movie while entertaining yourself and also dealing with loneliness. Start with a particular area of interest and gradually you can begin to branch out into other areas.

If you like series, you can also get invested in them or even start a discussion about it with people of like minds.

    4. Go to the gym or start home workouts- Working out refreshes your body and mind. It literally clears your head, helps you release tension and makes you think clearly. It boosts your mood and after a while, your body even begins to look forward to it.

    5. Make more money- You’d be surprised how lack of cash can make you feel lonely or just sad. You might be making money right now, but maybe you’re just not making enough. Try looking for other sources of income and you might even be too busy to be lonely.

    6. Learn a new skill/hobby- Learning a skill, no matter what it is gives you something to focus on. And as you are working to better yourself through learning this skill, you’re opening up yourself and engaging in something that would take your mind off the loneliness. You might even meet interesting people along the way.

    7. Get a boo- Yes yes, we have finally touched this matter. You might as well be lonely (emphasis on might) because you have been single for too long. Haba, open yourself up to dating once again.

With the right person, you’d be shocked at how much light and happiness can come into your life. But no go date reg flag o!

Remember, the feeling of loneliness is usually just for a time, it will pass. What matters most is what you do in these moments.

Don’t mope around or be sad, even in that state you can be productive and make the best out of it. Ideas can come to you that would benefit your life in the end, so remain positive and stand strong.

For some people sha you just need to watch a movie 🙂

We understand that loneliness and depression can be a serious issue in some cases so don’t hesitate to seek professional help for your mental health and keep up communication with the people you love.

    Have an awesome week ahead!
