With relation to finances and jobs, these are the nuggets we received:
“Carry money, a lot of money. The first three days require more documents than you will ever need in your life.”
“Don’t use money anyhow as a newcomer, life seems sweet until you settle and discover that it was a mirage.”
“Learn a skill, it might sound funny but it is very important if you don’t have a job, your skill will speak for you and there are a lot of skills to learn. We are in the internet age.”
“Start working early, I actually thought making money online was a myth until three years ago, my advice would be to invest in learning skills that are in demand and then apply for jobs as soon as possible.”
“Don’t convert all your dollars at once.”
Relations with other people and lifestyle. Here’s what they said:
“Don’t ever think anyone owes you anything ( love, respect, understanding especially from the Russians)”
“As a newcomer, be careful of the people you mingle with, and the friends you keep. Don’t trust anyone easily, and don’t lose guard.”
“It’s okay to stay alone if you can afford it, but if you are going to be sharing with people, be careful, sharing an apartment with the wrong person is the fastest way to depression here .”
“Don’t rush in making decisions about yourself.”
“To be sincere, the first thing is to stay within the capital or where there are Africans. Staying in any other place you might find it hard to cope because there is no support system.”
Education, spiritual things, and others
“Be open to both people from your country and different nationalities (Russians included).”
“Mingle with your Russian classmates- it would help go far and open doors.”
“Think properly before coming into this country or even retrace your steps to a better country where things are a lot better and accessible.”
“Find a house of prayer lest you fall into depression CV anytime soon.”
“Coming into Russia as a student has the advantage of learning the Russian language fast because it is taught in school.”
“Try your best to learn the language. It will go a long way in helping you.”
“If you are coming to Russia to school, have plans before graduation.”
“Find a church, those people will really be your family for the longest! And it will ground you from straying as you will be accountable.”
“Figure out the transport system as soon as you arrive.”
“Bring good spices and food from home!”
“Prepare yourself mentally!”
