HOW BULK BUYING CAN ACTUALLY SAVE YOU MONEY: TOP TIPS FOR YOU

“I walked into Auchan, praying that I get the best deals on my groceries this time. I always buy in bulk whether for my pastry business or my personal use.

As I turned to the food aisle, I saw the familiar yellow and red tags indicating that there was a discount on some products. I smiled and got to work, fishing for the best deals according to the price per unit. In one hour, I was done and I wheeled my cart out of the shopping mall.

I was happy deep down because I got all the things I wanted at a good price and even lower than I budgeted. I pushed my cart into the parking lot while already praying that my next trip to this place be successful, abi? It’s not kuku too early.

Now, you might be asking, what exactly is bulk buying?

It’s simple- buying your products in large quantities and usually at a discounted price. It is buying more of a product to get a discount as opposed to buying a single unit of that product with no discount.

Bulk buying has saved me and my business a lot of stress. I never have to worry about running out of products for a long time and I always get enough of what I need.

However, bulk buying has a lot of advantages and a few disadvantages and we’ll be sharing these along with tips on making the most of your bulk purchases.

  1. Saving. Ironically, you get to save when you buy much more at once. So instead of buying household items individually and in small quantities, which would only last for a short while, it is better to buy in large quantities and pay less (in total) in a way that they even keep you going for months.
  1. Avoiding multiple visits to these stores: This is also a form of saving because once you don’t visit these stores as often as most people do, you are not tempted to buy unnecessary things.

And even when you go shopping, you know exactly what things are running out and in what quantity you need to buy.

  1. Getting the best deals for your money: Before heading to the store, ensure you check for reusable things. For example, if you already have spices and beverage containers, consider buying them in refill packages instead of new containers since some products are cheaper that way.
  1. Be careful when you see products that sell for prices that are way too good to be true: Your first impulse should be to check the expiry date since some stores do this thing where products that are expiring soon are put on a discount. Check to be sure that you would have consumed the product by the expiry date.
  1. Pay a lot of attention to the quality of products you are getting too: Don’t just get a product because it is cheaper– there are a lot of other things to consider- the brand, how long it will last you and even overall quality of use.
  1. Stay intentional: A lot of deals might be tempting and you can easily fall into overconsumption so make sure you stick to your list and focus only on the necessary purchases.
  2. Buy goods bearing in mind the available storage space you have: Before buying large amounts of chicken or cereal ask yourself if you have the storage space to keep them, so you don’t end up wasting food and money.

Calculating the cost per unit:

Let’s say 900grams of rice costs 60, a gram costs approximately 0.07 per gram. Another 1500grams of rice cost 70, a gram in this case is 0. 05 per gram.

Which of these two options is cheaper?

Bulk buying is definitely more beneficial than buying in units, so if you have never tried it, this is your cue.

On your next trip to Auchan, Lenta or Okey, try buying in bulk. You can start small with basic items and progressively buy more and more. Just know you might get some wide-eyed looks like the ones I get when I show up to the cashier with my full cart, but no wahala, just ignore the stares because you know you are getting your money’s worth.

Have fun shopping!”
