In many African countries, Nigeria as a striking example, more and more people are becoming unsatisfied with the living circumstances and would rather find themselves in another country.
In fact many people dream about this for months and years on end before it eventually becomes a reality.
The truth is not everyone will, can or should leave the country, but for those who finally leave, here are some of the tested and trusted pathways:
With a student visa
This is probably the most popular way people leave the country. Whether you’re on scholarship or not, you have the opportunity to become a part of the country you’ve studied in by finding a job so that you can stay and work.
If you can’t get a scholarship, you can always research options in countries where there are universities with free or cheap tuition.
For Russia (and countries like Germany, France etc.) for example, it’ll be an advantage to learn a new language so you can integrate faster and increase your chances to get a job then get permanent residency or citizenship.
If you’re planning to move abroad as a student (undergraduate or post graduate), you will still need to do a lot of research and keep your eyes open for opportunities before and even after you eventually move into the country.
As a professional
Many career pathways open up work visa applications for professionals to move into another country based on their education or work experience.
You can start this journey by looking to platforms like LinkedIn to view available opportunities in your field. You can even start this search as a professional English teacher in countries with that need.
For example, doctors and medical practitioners need to write and pass licensing exams in their destination country before getting certified to practice.
Again, research is your best friend since similar visas can even be offered to freelancers, startup founders or remote workers in countries like Germany or Dubai.
As an investor
Even though this might not be a popular pathway, it works for people who have enough money to invest in a business especially in countries like the UK and the US.
You can also buy property to be eligible or literally “pay” for the citizenship in some other countries.
Through your talents
Look to countries like UK, US, France, China, Australia to give visas to potential leaders in fields like sports, arts, digital technology and scientific research.
Through family
Certain countries will give you automatic citizenship or permanent residence if you can prove you’re closely related to their citizen (as a spouse, parent or child).
As an asylum seeker
If you are being persecuted in your home country (facing serious social discrimination or human rights abuse), you can get a refugee or humanitarian visa in several countries.
This post is only an introduction to the ways you can legally relocate from your country. This means you’ll still need to do a lot of research depending on which pathway applies to your specific needs.
